| Step Four: Technical skills and value added — DIFFERENTIATE!
Hone your hard technical skills if you want to break into “analyst” high finance roles. Prove you can do the work. For example, write a thorough and comprehensive report that shows your analytical skills. Build and analyze financial models. Demonstrate that you can hit the ground running on the job. Highlight skill sets that others don’t have. Outline your experience that others don’t have that you can leverage at your ideal role. |
| Step Three: The list
Make a list of skills required for your job and list your skills. |
| Step Two: Tell me why you are the best
Everyone’s just as smart, if not smarter than you. Show, not tell. You must be able to articulate why you are better than the rest, given the fact that there are people out there smarter and more experienced. |
| Step One: Figure out the job/career track you wish to pursue!
Have some honest, good reasons besides the money. |
| Know the major types of interviews and interview questions: - cultural fit (airport rule — can I stand being stuck in an airport delay with you? - case study (brain teasers to test analytical/thinking skills) - technical (hard skills) - resume (make sure there’s no B.S. there!) |
| Don’t just memorize one personal pitch and call it a day. Be prepared to make slight alterations depending on who you’re speaking with! |
| The personal pitch, aka the personal development statement, is also known as the elevator pitch. Prepare a very brief 30-second speech that tells who you are, what you do, what you’re looking for, something outstanding about you, and a major accomplishment of yours in one sentence. This is the time for you to shine and play up all the amazing things you’ve done and learned. |
| Don’t just meet someone for coffee and burn bridges. Follow up with thank you emails and ask them to help guide you throughout the recruitment process. Most people would be glad to shed some light on their own experiences. |
| A truly successful person knows what they want and what they can give. Be focused, and know your industry or the industry that you wish to be in. Always have direction! |
